Mystery shopping in the UAE: what it is, how it works and what you learn
A mystery shopper is a trained customer who scores a real service experience against a checklist. Done well, it shows how your standards look to the person at the counter, not on paper.

How it works
The process has three steps. You and the agency agree the scenarios and the scoring form. A trained shopper plays the customer without revealing who they are: they visit a store, call a hotline, send an email or complete an online journey. Then they file a report against the form, with the time, the names where allowed, and what they saw.
What gets scored
- Greeting and attention: how quickly and how warmly the customer is acknowledged.
- Product knowledge: whether staff answer questions correctly.
- Process: whether staff follow the steps you set, such as offering a loyalty card.
- Store standards: cleanliness, displays, signage and stock on the shelf.
- Close: how the visit ends, and whether the customer would come back.
Retail, banking, hospitality, healthcare and government services all use the method.

Making the results useful
A score by itself changes nothing. The value comes from patterns: which stores do well, which step is missed most often and whether it improves after training. Share the results with the teams, not only with management, and repeat the visits so you can see change over time.
Mystery shopping and training
Mystery shopping is most useful when it connects to field training. The findings tell you what to teach, and the next round of visits shows if it worked. Arsh Marketing runs both, along with retail audits that record prices, stock and competitor promotions.

Questions
What is mystery shopping?
Mystery shopping is a research method in which a trained person acts as a customer and scores the experience against a checklist, without staff knowing.
Is mystery shopping the same as a retail audit?
No. Mystery shopping scores the service experience. A retail audit records what is on the shelf, such as prices, stock and displays.
How often should I run mystery shopping?
Run it on a schedule, such as monthly or quarterly, so you can compare results and see whether training changed anything.
